Curatorial Statement
The Marked By Color Exhibition brings awareness to the movement between Cubism and Abstract art. The bridge between these two styles was a movement called Orphism. The name was created by a poet name Guillaume Apollinaire in 1912.
The artists in this exhibit display their concerns for color, shape, and form. Because the artists were from Paris, France the works of art shown here focus on the 20th century in Paris, France. As you adventure through the exhibition you will explore the characteristics of Orphism in each work of art. The images in the works of art portray important symbols from Paris. These artists push beyond the boundaries of Cubism and create their own form in the process. You will see how this style is very linear and abstract, yet is harmonious at the same time through color and form.
The artists use color and unusual shapes to give the paintings emotion and bring the painting to life. Artists in this exhibition, Delaunay and Kupka, explore the idea of color and harmony throughout their works of art presented here. Delaunay and Kupka bring together the hue of color with musical pitch. While navigating through the exhibition notice how the shapes and color relate to idea of music and art. By using concentric circles and color, Orphism separates itself from Cubism and Abstract art.
As you travel through this exhibition you will discover that there is much more to these paintings than meets the eye. The Marked By Color Exhibition gives you the opportunity to step outside the real world and dive into a colorful and warped view reality.
